Power Wheelchair Safety Tips

Power wheelchairs, thanks to the advancement of breakthrough technology, enable everyone to reclaim their mobility and live wealthy, independent lives. Learning to ride a motorised wheelchair might be difficult, therefore we'd like to share 5 safety precautions with you!

Every night, charge your battery.

When it comes to maintaining your power wheelchair, battery care is critical. Even if you barely used your wheelchair that day, fully charging it at night will help to extend the life of your battery.

Put no weight on the armrests or footplates.

When getting in and out of your electric wheelchair, avoid putting weight on the armrests and footplates. They are not designed to support weight. You risk injuring yourself and destroying your chair if you place your weight on such spots.

Conduct regular maintenance checks

The more familiar you become with your chair, the easier it will be to hear and see if there is a problem with the mechanisms or components. Look for frayed wires, abnormal squeaking or squealing, and other anomalies. If you notice something is wrong, we recommend that you have it checked out as soon as possible.

Keep Your Power Wheelchair From Getting Wet

The electrical wiring in your power wheelchair might be seriously damaged if it gets wet. Driving across puddles should be avoided because the water can spill over your seat. Also, try to avoid driving in the rain as much as possible. If you must travel in light rain, keep the controls and joystick covered with a plastic bag. Thunderstorms and heavy rain should never be used to operate your power wheelchair.

On Outdoor Terrain, Exercise Caution

When travelling on uneven outdoor terrain, remember to take it slowly and with caution. You don't want to risk losing control, becoming stuck, harming yourself, or destroying your chair. Sand, snow, crumbling sidewalks, gravel, and hills are some examples of outdoor hazards.
